can you get a bingo of 14 cats?
Fifteen, if you count the pawprint on the center.
I'm not actually sure what prompted me to make this. I like playing bingo cards, but felt that they needed an extra oomph. What I do know was how I got inspired by Liuba Draws' China Bingo Game when researching for illustrated bingo cards.
What I got from it was "a vibrant bingo card that's based on what we can see around us". Like cats! So many of them to see.
For someone who loves cats, I find myself intimidated from drawing them sometimes. This was one way of getting around that initial fear, though I eventually realized that drawing 24 cats in 5 days was probably a bit too much. Maybe next time, my A4 poster dream...
The dreaded coloring phase, which lasted almost 3 days. It was not cute.
I recorded the process during the lineart phase, which got me thinking about how to document future pieces. We'll see!
What went well ⋆˚࿔
- The process of actually drawing the cats: I like how I figured out how I want to draw their bodies, showing the subtle ways in which they contort into various shapes
- Making the cats interact with each other: Allowing myself to literally go outside the box opened up a lot of fun possibilities! Makes the overall piece more interactive for both me and the viewer
- Playing with the color scheme: My main colors are black, orange, and..very light brown? I love how I added different colors (a reddish orange and a reddish brown) that are simultaneously distinct and cohesive altogether
What can be improved ⋆˚࿔
- Building a more streamlined workflow in layer and folder organization: My layers are a mess in this one, which definitely impacted my patience at times. I learned that there are some caveats to using the object tool on vector layers (I use Clip Studio Paint)
- Incorporating a more defined flow in the composition: I like how chaotic the cats are, but I thought about pushing myself to create a subtle line of action, while also maintain the illusion of chaos
- Add a variety of cat breeds and patterns: You may or may not notice a clear bias towards orange cats. I surprised myself by counting at least five. Without realizing it, I gave myself a limit on what cats to draw based on the color palette
Overall, I'm pretty happy with this! I hope that when I do finally start my A4 poster dream, I give myself more time. Preferably more than 5 days.
Which one's your favorite? (Mine is the brown one with black stripes)
And most importantly, did you get a bingo?
